Village Carousel was a functional, manually-powered carousel that echoed the cyclical dimensions and sensory overload of Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Miami, Florida. Like the celebrated creators of Vizcaya, the artists behind the carousel worked collaboratively to produce an immersive artwork that embodied the spirit of material and experiential synthesis that occurs practically everywhere on the property.

The carousel included four hybrid creatures inspired by the mythological and historical figures associated with the estate and its context in South Florida and includes a “ghost chair” which makes reference to the seasonal preparations that took place on the property.

The performative role of the artists in Village Carousel provided an opportunity to shed light on the hidden labor that powered (and continues to power) the spectacle of Vizcaya.
